Interests are:

Study of a rare genetic disorder of Osteolysis:

• Study of the accuracy of the Minneapolis VA administrative databases for diagnosis of rheuamtoid arthritis. Investigator initiated protocol. Data analysis completed and manuscript submitted.

• Immunohistochemical study of normal human synovium. Investigator initiated protocol. In collaboration with University of Pennsylvania and National Institute of health, we studied normal human synovium characteristics. Manuscript in press.

• Immunohistochemical study of early rheuamtoid arthritis. Investigator initiated protocol. In collaboration with University of Pennsylvania and National Institute of health, we studied synovium from patients with early rheuamtoid arthritis. Manuscript in press.

• Study of predictors of health status and health care utilization in veterans receiving care at VISN-13. Secondary data analysis of an existing database (K. Nichol, PI). Data analysis completed and manuscript submitted.

• Study of activities of daily living in VISN-13 veterans with arthritis. Secondary data analysis of an existing database (K. Nichol, PI). Data analysis in progress.

• Study of accuracy of self-report of diagnosis of chronic diseases in VISN-13 veterans with arthritis. Secondary data analysis of an existing database (K. Nichol, PI). Data analysis in progress.

• Opioid use and dependence in patients with musculoskeletal pain. Investigator initiated protocols (M. Mahowald, PI). In data analysis phase and manuscript preparation.

• Treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis with etanercept: RCT and open label extension study. Drug company initiated protocol.

• Sleep physiology and pharmacologic manipulation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (M. Mahowald, PI). The study of sleep discrepancy in patient perception and report of sleep parameters compared to actual measures by polysomnography and how sleep discrepancy is modified by various medications taken at bedtime. Investigator initiated protocol. In data analysis phase and manuscript preparations.

• Retrospective view of preliminary experience with IA-botulinum toxin A for refractory joint pain ((M. Mahowald, PI). Data analysis completed and manuscript submitted.

• Protocol for randomized controlled trial of IA-botulinum toxin for chronic knee pain (M. Mahowald PI). P-IND from the FDA has been obtained, Protocol is approved by the IRB and Allergan has agreed to fund the study.

• Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of IA-botulinum toxin for chronic shoulder pain in the frail elderly, has been approved for funding by the MN Arthritis Foundation. And supplemental funding request is under review by Allergan.

• Protocol for a QA/QI study of use of allopurinol, colchicine and other hypouricemic drugs at Minneapolis VAMC. IRB approved, data collection in progress.
