ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM/BIOCHEMISTRY
Our research is directed toward understanding the biochemical mechanism by which insulin and glucose stimulate the storage of glucose as glycogen in muscle cells and in liver. Removal of glucose from the blood and storage as glycogen in muscle and liver cells is the major way that insulin keeps the blood glucose from becoming unusually high after meals. When this mechanism does not function properly, diabetes mellitus is the result.
